We like tapered leaders as they allow you to use a strong knot, such as the double grinner, to improve the strength at the leader knot. Also a small neat knot catches far less weed and passes through the rod rings smoother then a normal leader knot. This is a big bonus for fixed spool users as a small knot flies through the rings without the distance sapping clattering which you can get with a big leader knot. It also hugely reduces the risk of fixed spool crack offs caused by the knot catching in the rings

We were not however impressed with those available so we contacted Varivas in Japan and with the help of Neil Mackellow and the Varivas design team we came up with the Varivas Tapered Leaders and they have proved a huge success since their introduction in the late 1990’s
Each leader is 13 metres long and the 18lb (0.37mm) main line tapers to a full 24′ belly of 70lb (0.74mm) so even if you use a longer rod you still have a good length of heavy line on the reel for safe casting.
Each spool holds 5 leaders and they are available in yellow or clear
